## Unit 3- Ratios and Proportions Unit 3 Parent Letter

**11/3/17:**Today students learned how to find the unit rate of different situations. They also learned how to find the better deal of different situations.

**11/6/17:**Today students learned how to find unit rates with complex fractions. We completed practice problems and

*they have homework practicing this skill tonight. Students also need to be*

**bringing a calculator to class and their 5 pieces of candy for an activity by Thursday!!****11/8/17:**Today students used unit rates with complex fractions to find chemicals needed for 2 different reactions to occur. Once students solved the problems to get the ingredients, we actually performed the 2 experiments and students observed what they saw.

*They have homework practicing this tonight.*Today students learned how to solve proportions using cross products, and how to determine to a relationship is proportional. They have homework practicing this tonight.

**Students also need to bring in 5 pieces of candy for an activity Friday & a calculator. We will also have a short quiz on Friday!**

11/9/17:11/9/17:

**Students also need to bring in 5 pieces of candy for an activity tomorrow & a calculator. We will also have a short quiz on Friday!****11/13/17:**Today students began learning about scale factor and dilations. Students began the lesson by creating a shrinky dink! They cut and measured each of the sides and decorated it. Tonight I will go home and bake the shrinky dinks. We will then measure the new side lengths and find the "shrinkage." We will then determine the scale factor.

*They have homework practicing this tonight. #1 #3 on their homework sheet.*

**11/14/17:**Today students continued their shrinky dink activity, and completed the after head measurements. Students then compared their original and heated measurements to see how much it shrunk. Then we continued our scale factor notes and practice.

*They have homework finishing their shrinky dink activity tonight.*

**11/15/17:**Today students completed a practice activity solving various scale factor and proportion problems to determine "who robbed the bank??" Students then re-worked their quiz from Friday, attempting to get a higher score if possible. They have scale factor homework tonight.

**11/16/17:**Students watched a lemonade demonstration to understand what it means to have a constant rate of change. They learned about direct variation and constant of proportionality.

*They have homework practicing this tonight.*

**11/17/17:**Students watched different "pixar shorts" and answered math questions from different concepts throughout the year using numbers from the movie.

*Have a great and relaxing break!*

**11/18-11/26**: Thanksgiving Break!

**11/27/17:**Students completed a Unit 3 Recap over topics we learned in this unit before the break.

*They have a graded homework assignment tonight.*

**11/28/17:**Students learned how to find sales tax and how to leave a tip.

*They have homework practicing this tonight. Quiz Friday!*

**11/29/17:**Students practiced finding sales tax and tip by using a menu to create their own receipt where they had to find sales tax and leave a tip. When they finished we introduced discounts.

*They have homework practicing this tonight. Quiz Friday!*

**11/30/17**: Students continued learning about discounts, and practiced this by looking through various adds to create a shopping list. They were then given a coupon and had to find their total bill with their discount and sales tax.

*They have a quiz tomorrow! They have a quiz review homework tonight.*

**12/1/17:**Students took their quiz on Direct Variation, tax, tips & discounts.
